It was gridlock yesterday for motorist and passengers in Lagos, as the roads around Ikeja, Ajao, Mafoluku, Oshodi, and environs experienced a near no-movement-traffic jam. This was caused by  a loaded 40-foot container that  fell on a government meat van yesterday June 6th, crushing a passerby and wounding several others. The sad event took place at Ikeja-Along Bus Stop on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Lagos.

Eyewitnesses said the truck had swerved off the road to avoid colliding with some policemen, who were chasing a motorcycle rider, before the incident occurred around 9am.

Determined to check the continued despoliation of the environment, the Federal Government yesterday said plans are underway to ban the use of plastic bags in the country.
Minister of Environment, Mrs. Hadza Mailafia, who dropped the hint during the 2013 World Environment Day celebration in Abuja, said government would favour the use of paper bags in their place.
Mailafia, who said the ban would take effect from January 2014, also said the Federal Government was also considering banning the use of sachet water.

RAINSTORM IN ZAMFARA

Two persons have been confirmed dead while 20 others were injured following a rainstorm which destroyed over 300 houses on Tuesday in Gusau.
The Executive Secretary of Zamfara Emergency Management Agency, Atiku Maradun, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Gusau.
Mr. Maradun, who spoke on behalf of Musa Kwatarkwashi, Special Adviser to the state governor on Emergency Management, said that the adviser had already visited the affected areas.
