MRI eliminates 11 Eaglets
The loss of 11 players to the
Magnetic Resonance Imaging test will not affect the Golden Eaglets'
preparations for the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Golden Eaglets assistant coach Nduka Ugbade gave the assurance on Friday in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.
Nigeria as well as defending champions Mexico, Sweden and Iraq are in first round Group F of the competition.
The competition is scheduled for October 17 to November 8 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The former defender confirmed that the team lost 11 players during the MRI screening to determine the actual ages of the players being prepared for the competition.
The coach said, however, that the development only called for more hard work and determination on the part of the team's technical crew.
The Eaglets' skipper at the maiden edition of the junior championship in 1985 at China, then as an under-16 event, said the players were initially within the stipulated age.
"They only grew over time. These same players that were excluded by the MRI were at the CAF U-17 championship in Morocco last April, having passed the test then.
"But, as growing up players, development which is constant in human beings must have occurred and that is what happened in the case of these players," he said.
Ugbade said the Eaglets, after the MRI screening, were left with 11 players who had constantly played together.
"So, what we have done now is to blend the 11 players with the new set of players recently invited to strengthen the team, and we have blended the new ones with the old set.
"The boys are assimilating very well and the technical crew is not leaving any stone unturned to ensure we have a good run at the World Cup," he said.
The 15th edition of the FIFA U-17 World Cup will be held in the six UAE cities of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai, Fujairah, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah.
The match venues, which will host a total of 52 matches, include the Sharjah Stadium in Sharjah, Rashid Stadium in Dubai and Khalifa Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain.
The rest are Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, the Emirates Stadium in Ras Al Khaimah and the Fujairah Stadium in Fujairah.
